AV Production 1
COM2115

Day 1 - Production Planning (current page)
Day 2 - Camera Techniques
Day 3 - Blocking and Enhancing Scene
When the content of your video proposal is well developed, you are ready for production planning - the process that will organize and manage the complexities of shooting. Planning is critically important for two reasons: time and money.

After completing COM1105, you are well prepared to continue learning the video filming process and begin to develop a more professional product, a product that has continuity and well captured content.

Production Planning

The importance of production planning becomes obvious if you think of an actual video shoot as similar to a theatrical performance. With a stage play, many people spend weeks conducting rehearsals, building sets, sewing costumes, and publicizing the show. All this lengthy preparation is for the two or three hours of the play's actual performance. During the critical period there should be no major mistakes. Its the production phase that depends on a short, intense period when all the planning and preparation are rewarded.
The planning involves:
  • People: the cast and crew.
  • Places: the locations and/or sets where shooting will take place.
  • Things: the equipment used to shoot the program, the props and costumes in it, and miscellaneous items like talent and location releases.
  • Plans: the scheduling and other organizational processes that ensure a smooth shoot.
People: Crew and Cast
In most professional video productions the personel involved demand the largest organizational effort and consume the majority of the budget. Some of these appear in the production. Other equally important personnel work behind the camera.

Finding Production People
Even the simplest video project may be too much work to handle alone, so the first step is to find some assistants. Here is a sample Crew Duty List:

Your Going to Need The Pitch!

The Assignment

For this task you will need to create your own short script, that tells a story about a main character from three separate points of view (first person, ominent observer and an over zealous third person who would gain from the main character's downfall).
  • synopsis and pitch
  • brief character profile for three people in your story
  • technical requirements (equipment - be specific)
  • costume and specific set requirements
  • script for the first scene in your story
  • storyboard that highlights scene locations
