Text Overlay

COM1005 HOME
Text Hyper-Overlay Project: You have THREE classes to work on this project. Use your time wisely! Remember to leave at least 10 minutes at the end of the last class to complete the reflections, as part of the MYP assessment tools.

*** YOU WILL PRESENT YOUR DESIGN AFTERWARDS! BE PREPARED TO SPEAK ABOUT IT.

At the bottom of the page, find tutorial videos (in case you missed your teacher's demonstration) as well as links to the setup document and the assignment rubric.

Powerful Text Overlay How-To

Overlay Assignment
For this project, you are to design a image in Photoshop that conveys a strong message of hope/love/generosity/caring/empowerment, using a selected portrait of a famous, or influential person and a work of poetry.

TASK INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Using Photoshop you will create a standard portrait art board that is 7" x 10", with 300 dpi resolution.

2)Review  the tutorial from Blue Lightening. Select an inspirational subject who conveys a positive attitude, belief in human spirit and the ability to make society a welcoming place. [Search the internet for an image, make sure it is labelled for reuse and a large resolution to reduce pixel distortion).
Import your image into the 7" x 10" art board within Photoshop.

BEGIN by opening the Google Doc within the classroom "MYP COMTECH REFLECTION"

3) Search the internet for  a work of poetry/lyrics that conveys your intended message of hope/love/caring/generosity/empowerment. Copy the text and place it into the Google Doc (MYP COMTECH REFLECTION). The same text will be used to create a word cloud. When creating the text overlay portion of the assignment you will need to transform the text into black and white use the word art add-on to generate a png. file.

(Download the final text as a .png file which can be opened within Photoshop)

5) Use layers and various placements of the text to create an impacting final image.

6) Open Google Classroom, open up the assignment, and get a copy of the Self-Assessment document.

7) Complete the rubric. Please answer all questions. Your answers determine part of your mark on the assignment.

8) Within the MYP COMTECH REFLECTION DOC complete a summary of the process used to compose the final image.

9) Save both files and ADD the file to the Google Classroom (both the .jpg AND .psd versions).

10) TURN IN your assignment and your reflections. Be prepared to share the final image with the class!

Guidelines:

- The selected portrait should be of an individual who is respected, kind, generous and considered a role model within society.

- The text should be appropriate and well displayed; and provide an intended message.

- The summaries are your personal reflection about your learning and are part of the IB/MYP model of learning.

- Font choice is very important. Ask yourself: does it line up with the theme and/or what mood I'm trying to set? One font can be boring and bland, but too many fonts can be disjointed and sloppy. Play around with spacing!

- Images used from the internet must obey copyright laws and credit of sources is essential. Make sure to search for images that are labelled for reuse.

- You can, however, use school logo and other images found on your Google Classroom.

- Your project will look much more professional if you use layer styles on your text and/or graphics.

- Background colour(s) are set to black. You may use solid colours, gradients, or any other patterns you can create with Photoshop.

- Students who work quickly are encouraged to complete two or more designs (and hand in the best one). The second attempt is almost always better-looking.

STUDENTS WILL ALL MAKE A SHORT PRESENTATION TO THE CLASS ABOUT THEIR PROJECT AFTER HANDING IT IN. BE PREPARED TO EXPLAIN YOUR FONT AND DESIGN CHOICES, THEME, AND ARTISTIC INTENT.
And here's a reminder of which space is which in your project (avoid the purple areas!):
