1) VIDEO LESSON - RULE OF THIRDS
2) PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL - HOW TO CROP IMAGES TO FOLLOW THE RULE OF THIRDS
Your teacher will perform a short demonstration of how to use Photoshop's Crop Tool to have your image better fit the rule of thirds.
- Use the Crop tool (C)
- Using the selection box in the top left of the toolbar, select Original Ratio.
- If you wish to reverse the orientation of your image (horizontal > vertical or vice versa), press X.
- Use the corner handles of the crop selection box to change the size of the image, and drag the selected area around until you achieve your desired composition.
By default, the Crop tool shows you the "tic-tac-toe" grid that you can use as Rule of Thirds guides.
3) CAMERA SIMULATOR: RULE OF THIRDS
Click HERE for a link to an interactive camera simulator that will test your ability to frame a photo in an interesting way (which conveniently adheres to the Rule of Thirds)
4) MINI-SHOOT: DEMONSTRATING RULE OF THIRDS
Set up your camera to the specifications asked by your teacher.
You have TEN minutes to take a series of HORIZONTAL images. Your teacher may suggest using different locations. Use camera partner as your subject in 1 of your photos. Zoom further out than the previous assignment.
At least half of these photos should follow Rule of Thirds composition, but a few should be centered too.
When you return:
- See if your images actually adhered to the rule of third. Download a photo and use Photoshop to highlight the rule of thirds using the CROP tool.
- Use the SNIPPET tool to capture a screen shot of your chosen image.
- Upload this image into the DAY 2 - Rule of Thirds assignment within GOOGLE classroom.
- Include a short description about your photograph (Subject, Location, How Rule of Thirds was Applied)
