COM2145 - Animation Frame By Frame Music Video

Previous
Next
Animation can make the most ordinary, become extraordinary.  The following short film was created by Olan Rogers. The use of both cell animation and computer aided animation techniques  create a vivid story which helps keep the audience engaged. Olan uses principles of animation (stretch, squish,...etc.,) and computer animation using layers to illustrate movement and special effects (flames, glowing).

Timing and 3 Main Principles of Animation

Timing is extremely important in an animation, as it relates to the frame speed. Frames are what make still pictures turn into moving action. A typical motion picture runs at 24 frames per second.  Animation can be produced with a lower frames per second ratio, since there is less details being displayed and the backgrounds are comprised of still images the lower frame rate doesn't cause distortion, or jumps in the images.

The 3 main principles are:

1.
A Picture or Image - The image can be two-dimensional or three dimensional.
2. Repetition with a Small Change - In order to create a feeling of something living, you need to create motion and this is achieved through repetition. Repeating a small change each time will create motion when using 24 frames/per sec. to create one second of animation. (12 frames/ per second is frequently used in 2D animation).
3. Speed - The addition of speed brings images to life, fooling the eye into believing that a collection of still images is animated, also known as the human phenomenon of persistence of vision. The brain retains images for a short period of time, so still images that are projected very quickly look like moving images.

Creating A Frame By Frame to Music

View the Beep Beep I'm a Sheep, by LilDeuceDeuce.
The goal of today will be to find an appropriate music sound file that you will create a frame by frame animation. The music sample will need to be downloaded from any royalty free location. The use of copyright material is prohibited unless you have been granted permission.

Locate a sound file that will be used to create your animation:  Try using Bensound.com to find a music file.
Download the file and save it within your Google Drive.
You will need to include "Moving Text, Main Character which utilizes life like attributes to the music, and a storyboard outlining your creation". Make sure to include all credits at the end of your feature.
Videos will be completed as H264.mp4 files.
Brainstorm a Character
  • Use a Google Draw, Adobe Illustrator, or access to drawing material and brainstorm a possible character that will be used to animate your music selection.
  • Review the tutorials for Photoshop CC Frame by Frame animation.
  • Use your Journal to Identify:
    • What method can you use to illustrate emotion, or emphasize life like attributes? (wave hands, moving hair)
    • Explain how your character relates to your selection of music.
    • Describe how you will include the animation techniques in your final product.
  • Submit a copy of your answers to the assigned Google Classroom folder and review these with your teacher.
