DES3115 - Industrial Design
Industrial design incorporates innovation, aesthetics, functional requirements, technology and ergonomics into a product in order to better meet the needs of the user. Students work creatively with design problems to analyze, propose and produce solutions using contemporary materials, techniques and finishes. The resulting presentations are both professional and unique.
Task - Develop a Design Brief that outlines your skills and meets the clients needs.
Introduction - Client
Earlier this year, Studio AC (a.k.a. the Studio for Architecture and Collaboration) was all over design blogs with a project called Broadview Loft. The apartment occupies a classic loft warehouse in Toronto with its exposed brick walls and wooden beams brimming with old-world character. To counter those rough-hewn features, the firm added some theatrical elements, most notably a white archway that frames the master bedroom, or, as the studio prefers to call it, a bed box. In lieu of a door, the box is concealed via a sheer white curtain that spirals into a circle at one end. The spatial play of this small but charming home reminds us a bit of Giotto’s 14th-century frescos.
One of the current trends in urban residential design is “micro-units”, small, studio-apartments. What is “small” differs from city to city, but in downtown Manhattan, a micro-unit is typically 350 square feet or less in size. A major key to successful micro-unit design is efficient space usage, using every square inch to include all of the features a person expects to have at home. Many micro-units feature built-in storage and flexible furniture, furniture that can serve a variety of functions.

Challenge
Design a single piece of furniture that combines the function of at least three pieces of furniture. This object must serve the main purpose of saving space. Build a digital model, and be sure it showcases all the functions of your piece.
Collect Info - Step 1 Design Process
Collect information (Use a Google Doc to begin a design brief for this module)
• Research micro apartment design & combined furniture.
• What are some traditional space saving techniques?

Brainstorm Ideas - Step 2 Design Process
Brainstorm & Analyze
• List out the furniture in your home, explore different combinations
• What is the main purpose of each piece of furniture?

Develop Solutions
Develop Solutions
• Make a study model of your brainstormed designs. (Note: All sketches and revisions of designs should be kept as part of the final portfolio.)
• What materials could you use? (Consider environmental and client's needs)

- Brief should consider these:
- materials
- ergonomics
- environmental
- client's needs
- function
- aesthetics

Final Design
Present your final model to your classmates and teacher. Design briefs should be thorough.
- Units of measurement should be to the nearest 0.01 cm.
- 3D projection with appropriate use of cross-sections, touch lines, assembly drawings, orthographic view, projection drawing, axonometric and rendered view including appropriate covering/materials where required.
